The LED case on the front of the case indicates that the headphones are charging. And if you do not have a charging pad on hand, you can always use the Lightning connector.
When fully charged, AirPods batteries last for 5 hours of listening or 3 hours of talk time. AirPods use the new H1 chip designed by Apple, and with the help of optical sensors and accelerometers they recognize when they are in the ears.
